Richard Schwartz is the president and chief operating officer of Village Park Homes in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and the former division president for DR Horton in Charlotte, NC. To ensure that he provides the highest-quality service to his clients, Richard Schwartz recently earned his contractor's license by passing the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA) commercial general building contractor examination, which is part of the organization’s Accredited Examination Program.
State contractor licensing agencies across the country accept NASCLA Accredited Examination Program examinations because the organization has collaborated with these groups to create a unified set of standards. This means that contractors seeking licenses in a new state or in multiple jurisdictions don’t have to take multiple or duplicate tests.
After taking a NASCLA exam, contractors can create an account in the organization’s National Examination Database (NED). This online registry provides licensing agencies with an easy way to verify that applicants have passed an exam. In addition, candidates can send their transcripts through the NED to participating licensing agencies in other states.
Candidates don’t have to be NASCLA members to take a NASCLA exam, but they must receive approval from NASCLA in order to register for it. They must also meet a series of exam candidate qualifications and will need to complete the exam within one year of registration. Candidates receive three chances to pass the exam, after which time they will need to re-register.
